Chosen image: Charlotte Rutherford

This shot is edgy and colourful. The blue background is complimented by the subjects make up and white jacket. The side profile shot allows the shapes of her hair to stand out more and create a repetitive pattern in the shot. I feel like the image works really well in being a fashion portrait. The lighting seems to be coming from two side, it is quite high up, visible from the bottom of the frame being darker. The subjects face has been lit from above, pointing down, perhaps a spot light. The background has also been lit from the right hand side to create an even finish, rather than the right side being in shadow. A shallow depth of field has been used, around f/8 and an shutter speed of about 1/100.
Recreation

As I don’t have any studio lighting at home I had to make do with my dad’s fishing light set up. I shot outside in a shaded area and used two lights. One was to the left of the subjects head and one in front the opposite way. After moving them around and experimenting, I found this was the most even and successful option. I also didn’t have a blue background and so felt white would look best for the model and set up. Using the two lights and shooting outside in the shade was my best attempt at recreating the light set up. It would have been better if the light sources were stronger and it was shot inside, but as I way unable to do so, I feel I managed as well as possible.
The original image is more contrasted and the lighting is stronger, perhaps it has been shot with a snood light source. Using the two light sources I did was the closest to what I could find at home, however the light outside probably took away from the strength of the light, if shot inside it would have been more contrasting, maybe more accurate.
Outcome:
I feel as if I have represented the image to the best of my ability using my resources from home, however I could have been a lot more successful doing it in the studio. I originally planned to complete the task not long after lockdown happened, but was unable to do so. If this has taught me anything it is to be more prepared and shoot as early as possible!
