Overall I am really pleased with the outcome of my edits. I was initially hesistant in completing a studio project due to my lack of experience with lighting and more ‘set up’ photography. My initial idea was to document beauty/fashion portraits of how fashion and hair had changed throughout each the decades. This idea would have been great to research photography styles and lighting techniques that were popular among these time and experiment with lighting techniques with a good purpose but unfortunatley I had to chnage my idea just before I started shooting. My new idea was to find a magazine that documents fashion and use its ideas in my own work. I wanted to focus on fashion, hair and make up and get creative with the type of shots I wanted to create.
With researching throughout my project I was constantly able to adapt and improve my ideas and techniques and found my research to be relevant and helpful. I usually find the research aspect difficult to manage, but found the flow easy in this project due to planning better. My chosen magazine was 1 Granary, a student fashion magazine made by students. The idea of all genres of creatives coming together to produce a magazine really appealed to me, however, due to lockdown I had to produce all elements myself. I enjoyed getting creative with hair, make up and fashion and found it to be the defining resemblence to my chosen magazine and it links all the images togther.
I found the lighting aspect difficult to recreate from home with limited options. I mainly stuck with flash as it was something I was more confident with and easily accessible. Flash was relevant to a lot of my research so I understood how I wanted to use it and my desired results. I also used two lights that I had a home for one of the shoots. I decided to shoot outside for a more even result and quite like the result.
If I was to re-do the project, I would have started shooting earlier and made use of the studio when I had the chance. I am pleased with my outcomes and feel they are relevant to my magazine and target audience. My target audience is younger people from an art background, more specifically students. This is quite a specific audience, so I knew from research the kind of work that would appeal to them more. I looked at images published in the magazine and also extended my research to other photographers who shoot similarly for inspiration.
