AD4803 Studio// Set task one- What’s out there, who did I, why, how and who’s looking?

I am looking at fashion portraits as this is something I enjoy most in a studio enviroment. As I also like to be creative with hair and make up, this is the perfect opportunity for me to use my creativity in a studio enviroment and translate it into my photography. I am looking at magazines and disgussing target audineces and how the images were shot. After this research I will continue to apply these questions to my research and translate it into my photography so that I can achieve relevant images to my traget audience and chosen publication.

In todays society photogrpy is used in many forms. Fashion photography is most used in magazine publications in the style of portrait photography. There are various magazines that alter the approach and purpose for a specific audience. In this post I will be looking at three different magazines who have three different target audiences. I am sticking to the genre of fashion portraiture, as this is what I will be shooting, therefor I thought it would be a good idea to start looking at specific audiences within the genre of fashion in order to decide a more clear path for my project.

Florence Pugh's Vogue Cover: From Little Women to Marvel Superhero ...

British Vogue is a British fashion magazine published based in London since autumn 1916. They are arguably one of the most recognised and successful fashion magazine, which often feature well known celebrities on the covers. Daniel Jackson shot this cover featuring Florence Pugh, an English actress. Daniel Jackson shoots for various magazines, such as vogue, ID and Vanity fair, all well known fashion based magazines. He is widely recognized for his capacity to apply the language of classical portraiture to the genre of fashion photography. Jackson is as adept directing his subjects within minimal studio environments as he is on dramatic location sets.

Vogue is a highend fashion magazine that is on the more expensive side, this being more easily asccessible to adults due to the price, more so women, due to the magazine being heavily influenced by women celbrities and models. The magazine is specifically targeted at young women from 20 to 40 years who have an interest into fashion, beauty and current trends. The purpose of the magazine is to inform, inspire and influence it’s viewers, mainly on current fashion trends and they hae such success in this due to their high profie models who are able to influence large audiences who respect them. Using celebrities on their covers enticises people to trust their opinions and it is also an honour for the celebrities to feauture on the cover, making it a win win for the magazine.

Seventeen Magazine Eliminating Frequency After 74 Years in Print ...

Allie Holloway shot this piece for Seventeen magazine. Her style is quite young and fun and she often shoots celebrities for magazines. In this case she has shot young actress, Amandla Stenberg. The magazine feautures young celebrities on their covers to draw in their target audience of readers, being 13-to-19-year-old females. Using a similar age group on the covers makes the magazine young and relatable which is a crucial part of persuading younger viewers to purchase the magazine.

Rather than just being about fashion, the magazine also offers advice and tips on various things, which is something that age group look for. The magazines purpose is to keep youths up to date with celebrity gossip, offer hair, bauty and fashion advice, and other activities that would only typically be admired by a younger audience. The price of the magazine is also on the cheaper side, making it easier for younger viewers to purchase it. The magazine often feautures fun and bright colours that appeal to a younger audience and genreally seperates older readers due to it potentially being too mesy or cluttered for an older audience. The photography techniques also tend to be more simple and less complex in terms of lighting and technique in comparison to ones found in other magazines such as Vogue.

1granary

Brittany Dickinson, a student shot this piece for the magazine 1 Granary. The magazine is made from students, from the photography, garments to the printing team. The target audeince is also for students and post grads. The level of relatability and respect is best recieved by this audience as they would have just graduated or are still in the same position as the publishers. I am interested in this magazine in particular because these aspects can be applied to me and I feel like I best relate to this magazine. I feel as if it is important to have an understanding of the chosen magazine and you have to repersent the same kind of results.

1 Granary’s purpose is to be honest and true about the life and work of aqrt students. They are well respected within the industry for their unprecedented honesty and depth, 1 Granary Issue 6 dives into the work and lives of fashion designers today. The magazine is great for people interested in any form of art as so many different industries within art work together in order to create the magazine and this extends their audience from just being people interested in fashion, instead all industries are able to relate and appreciate the efforts behind the publication.

In conclusion, I feel this research has led me to be more interested in 1 Granary. I relate more to their purpose and content so feel I could best portray similar work that interests me personally. I will research their magazine in more depth to gain a better understanding of their work before shooting my content. I will also be looking at photographers from outside the publication as I want to widen my research and develop my own style, still being fit for the magazine.
