AD4803 Studio// Practitioner research 3- Strong flash and contrast: Anna Fox

Anna Fox is a British documentary photographer, known for a “combative, highly charged use of flash and colour”

Fox uses bright colours to make her images bright and strong. She also uses flash to make her subjects pop from the backgrounds. A lot of the backgrounds shes uses consist of natural settings, such as grass and trees, especially from her project, ‘photos of Linda’. She uses clothing that is contrasting to the backgrounds to allow for a more contrasting seperation.

Photos of Linda

This shot from Fox is from her series, ‘Photos of Linda’. It shows the subject in a garden wearing fancy dress. The subject looks really out of place and the over all feel of the image is quite fairytale like. The harsh flash sepreates the subject from the background and creates strong colours and contrast. The subject is almost central to the frame, with her body at an angle, looking towards the left. The photographer is slightly above her and it seems that a wide aperature has been used quite close up.

I would like to use some of the surrealism that is present in Fox’s portraits in my work, I can create a similar feel in my work by using strong flash, wide aperature on a sunny day.
