Why Technique Matters (Important –  please complete this exercise early)

Artist: R.L. Burnside

Song: Let My Baby Ride

QUESTION 1 Ask yourself what keeps this track going for so long? What singular item keeps this pedestrian tune going?

ANSWER – Time, rhythm and beat – All laid down by a percussion player (not necessarily a drum kit).

This style of rhythm is often referred to as ‘walking down the street’ by drummers or percussionists – Basically you feel like your stomping and ‘rocking’ from one foot to another (hence the term).

QUESTION 2 – What is the singular factor that makes this photo-story roll so well?

ANSWER – Easy version – Use of light!

ANSWER – Complex Version (Just like you should be putting on your blogs!)

Use of light – Especially the recognition of the environment and its visual qualities – In the case of ‘Sun City’ raw concrete buildings (see the first image of the complex taken from the air) – The buildings reflective qualities and the predominant use of beige and white both in exterior and interior decorations!

The collection of images work collectively as a series because of the continous light used. Each shot is bright, with similar beige, blues, white and orange tones present. The light has been made through the reflective buildings and the American sun. Flash has also been used as a way of filling in the sunlight to eliminate harsh shadows and create a more light and airy finish to the images. All the images have been shot at the same place at the same time of year, so the backgrounds are familiar and the lighting from the sun is repeted similarly in each shot.
